From 1981-2017, Bronx native Kip Hanrahan’s American Clave label produced a sui generis of music assemblages.
Kip, alongside Ismael Reed’s “Conjure” and Robby Ameen/Horacio El Negro’s “Dark Rhumba” series, created overlays of genres, with themes from memory of resistance, and hoo-doo conjurings from Bahia, Haiti, Havana, New Orleans, and NYC. A thousand and one tales from the African diaspora.
