Mapleshade Records was a singular recording enterprise that eschewed industry standards. Owner Pierre Sprey created a recording studio in a rural Maryland mansion, using analog tape recorders, two or three mics, no processing, reverb, or a mixing board, in his refurbished living room. Within this creative cacophony he made over 200 recordings, most conceived and guided by the artists themselves. “Made in the Shade” will begin with the label’s initial recordings and follow its ongoing artists-directed projects.
